It is important to use the right type of gear and make sure your gear can withstand the harsh marine environment. This is because saltwater and electronics make a poor mix, once saltwater gets into your electronics it is game over. Corosion seems to set in almost immediately. This is why we make sure our gear is either waterproof or has a waterproof housing.
Along with having the proper cameras and camcorders you also need backup equipment for data storage and charging of equipment. Backup equipment is abolutely crucial when bringing electronic equipment along on expeditions, batteries never last and are in constant need of charging, this is why we have both scenarios for charging our gear if the weather becomes inclement or do not have time to use your solar charger during the day. If you are in Alaska during the summer, this isn't a problem, connect your batteries up before you go to sleep, they will be ready by the time you get up!
