Biography

Karen Stevens is a registered nurse, working in a pediatric intensive care unit, in Victoria, B.C.  When not at the hospital she can frequently be found out paddling, whether it be on a leisurely day paddle or out exploring the waters on an extended trip.   With over twenty-five years in the sport, initially canoeing and then progressing to whitewater kayaking before taking up ocean kayaing with the birth of her daughter.  Karens' passion has been to share her experience with other paddlers looking to become involved in the sport of sea kayaking.   She has taken on this project to further share other aspects of her experiences, so that others can gain a new perspective on what our oceans have to offer.

  Kirby Stevens is best known for the creation of  “Marine Recreation Maps” through his company, Coastal Waters Recreation.   Kirby has a degree in Geography, specializing in outdoor recreation and tourism.    He has in excess of over thirty-five years of paddling starting with an inflatable rowboat at age 12.    Out of his love for the sport of kayaking and wanting to share his information proved this to be a successful combination.   Over time he has been involved with numerous paddling organizations on a local, provincial and national level.   With the addition of his daughter he became more involved with teaching families and children how to progress in the sport of sea kayaking safely.   He was instrumental in organizing the family kayak program at the West Coast Sea Kayak Symposium, where he maintained his involvement in excess of eight years.   With the advent of digital photography, he regained his enthusiasm for photography, and has developed his skill in videography.  With frequent requests for more information he has taken on this new endeavor with the development of the “Water Ventures” video series. He is a wealth of information that he shares during trade shows and presentations and now will include his newest love, kayak videography.
